Britain’s oldest Beef Shorthorn herd led a bumper sale at Skipton on Wednesday (8 November), as in-calf heifers made £832 more than last year and prices peaked at 6,500gns and 6,000gns.

The two highlights, both Fortress of Upsall daughters, came from Hon G Turton, Thirsk, North Yorkshire, which sold to two Cumbrian buyers as trade held close to last year’s impressive averages and the 10-strong Upsall consignment levelled at £3,806.

This beat Skipton’s previous Beef Shorthorn record of 5,900gns on a day the society illustrated the increasing popularity of the breed as registrations and members continues to grow.

At 6,500gns was Clipper X1152 of Upsall (TI+19, SRI +16), a roan 20-month-old heifer that was knocked down to J Sloane and J Hayton, Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria.
