Claas cranks up power with latest Axion 870 tractor

Claas has announced that it will be adding a more powerful model to its range of Axion 800 tractors with a peak power of 295hp.

The 870 will sit above the current 850 flagship, but uses the same 6.7-litre, Fiat six-pot engine.

In the 850 this generates a max power of 264hp, but Claas has managed to nudge this up to 280hp in the 870.

Unlike the other models in the range, it has also added a boost function that steps up power to 295hp at speeds above 14kph or when the pto is engaged.

But other than the tweak in engine power, the new model is pretty much identical to the 850.

That means it is fitted with the maker’s Cmatic continuously variable gearbox and has the option of up to seven electric spool valves.

Unfortunately the Hexashift powershift is not available on this model as it is not up to dealing with the extra grunt.

Buyers will be able to get their hands on the new model in 2016.
