Freight rate battle in Canada
CANADAS grain farmers and companies are at war with the government over railway freight rates.
The government ended subsidy for transport – which can account for 40% of the cost of moving grain – in 1995 under pressure from international trading partners.
Now the federal government appears likely to embrace further deregulation, as set out in a report published this week.
Farmers fear it will mean a steep rise in freight rates.
