Orange blossom midge
ORANGE blossom midges were out in force in wheat from Kent to south Lincs last week.
A second wave could follow where rain has fallen recently, warns ADAS.
"Adults emerge about a week after rain," says entomologist Jon Oakley. Crops should be checked in the evening and chlorpyrifos applied if thresholds of one midge/six ears in seed or milling crops, or one midge/three ears in feed, are exceeded up to flowering.
"You have got a week to 10 days to get it on after the adults are spotted." *
