COTSWOLD Pig Development Company is tapping into gene marker technology by taking a shareholding in Rosgen, a commercial offshoot of the Roslin Institute carrying out DNA typing to identify marker genes.
Cotswold hopes the move will give it an inside track on access to new technology in this area.
"Ultimately, markers may remove the need for expensive performance testing, offering a picture of the genetic merit of each animal at birth, and a chance to improve traits such as meat quality, which are otherwise difficult to measure," says Cotwolds director of science and genetics John Webb. *
