Police charge man after 15-mile tractor chase

The driver of a stolen tractor has been arrested after a 15-mile police chase across two counties involving several police cars and a helicopter.

Police were called to a farm in Tilney St Lawrence, Norfolk, at 7.55pm on Saturday (16 January) to reports that a man was stealing a tractor.

But by the time officers arrived on the scene, the red Case tractor was being driven from the farm.

A police chase followed involving at least six police cars and a police helicopter had to be scrambled.

Officers followed the stolen tractor across the border into Cambridgeshire.

The pursuit ended in Oakroyd Crescent, a cul-de-sac at the bottom of De Havilland Road, Wisbech.

The tractor driver ran off but was arrested on the scene on suspicion of theft.

The Twitter account for the Beds, Cambs and Herts Roads Policing team later posted a picture of the recovered stolen tractor.

The vehicle was left abandoned in front of a house with its digger raised and left inches away from the first floor window in what was a lucky escape for homeowners.

A spokesman for Cambridgeshire Constabulary said a man aged in his 20s from Wisbech was arrested in connection with the theft.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call 101.

Since this story was written, Nathan Lovell, 25, of Trinity Road, Wisbech, was charged with one count of theft of a motor vehicle, failing to stop and driving without insurance.
