Last year’s winner, Annabelle Heath, applied to study for a Higher National Certificate in poultry production at Scotland’s Rural College, a two-year course delivered through distance learning modules.
By contrast, the 2014 winner Sam Jones has benefited from a series of training courses, including a course with the University of Georgia on winter ventilation.
In addition, he became one of the first at Aviagen Turkeys to complete the RSPH Level 2 award in safe use of rodenticides. Mr Jones has obtained a fork-lift qualification and completed the poultry welfare officer course run by AW Training in Bristol, and is enrolled for the Level 4 ILM Management Diploma with Joint Learning.
He said the courses undertaken had helped progress his career.
“Their varied nature means I’ve increased my development in key areas including ventilation management, bird welfare and people management. These new skills have allowed me to progress and helped me to contribute towards procedure development within the business.”
The deadline for entries is Friday, 23 September.
