Iranians fall out over cost of chicken

We all know that chicken is popular – the OECD recently forecast that it would overtake pork as the world’s most favourite meat.

But street riots about the price of chicken? Food riots are nothing new, but the following footage has been posted on YouTube, purporting to show Iranians demonstrating against the rocketing price of poultry.

According to The Guardian newspaper, the price of chicken in Iran has doubled in the past year, as Western economic sanctions start to bite. The Iranian government has even had to hand out subsidised chicken to quell the crowd’s anger.

Like most smart phone footage from a turbulent Middle East the images are grainy and the sound quality tinny.

It certainly sounds like they’re upset. But according to official media sources, “no one was arrested and there were no reports of any violence”. Not much of a demonstration really.
