Groups join forces for grain gain

FIVE WEST COUNTRY grain groups have joined forces to streamline their marketing operations and cut costs.

West Country Grain will have 500 members growing 80,000-100,000t of combinable crops from Penzance in the west to Bristol and Lyme Regis in the east.

General manager Ted Bird said the amalgamation would help contain costs and create greater financial and trading security.

Chairman John Moss added that the move would bring farmers closer to the market-place while retaining a local identity.

Grainfarmers will act as marketing agent for the new limited company.

The three existing stores, Cannington Grain Store, Devon Grain Store and Kernow Grain, will remain under independent farmer-director management.
