Big changes planned in Canterbury
Brian Mummery in Canterbury expects to finish winter wheat tomorrow (Aug 19) with good results. The first 90% of Xi19 has yielded 9.4 – 10t/ha, which is 1.25t/ha above last year due to the better weather.
“We didn’t start cutting wheat until September last year – the weather was atrocious.”
The crop is heavy with a good colour, and he hopes the protein will be good. All Pearl winter barley met malting at 6.5t/ha, but Karbuk peas were not as good as expected. Mr Mummery said they had gone flat and did not mature properly.
But he expects to make big changes on the farm next year in a bid to simplify retirement.
He is to grow 60ha of Optic spring barley in place of winter barley and oilseed rape. He said this was due to a good contract offering £88/t: “It’s best to take advantage of a good contract when the prices are low.”
