Canberra produces record breaking yields
Mark Warrener from Notts is very happy with the results from his Canberra oilseed rape as he broke his record at nearly 4.9 t/ha (2 t/acre).
“It was a nice little surprise.”
In total, 100 ha (250 acres) has been combined at an average yield of 4.2 t/ha (1.7 t/acre) with 7-9% moisture.
Mr Warrener still has another 1.6 ha (4 acres) still to harvest because this part of the crop has been late maturing due to pigeon damage earlier in the year.
Unlike many other farmers around the UK, Mr Warrner didn‘t have problems with establishment in August last year.
“Our crop established fine. We farm on light sandy soil so things get going easily, just the trouble is to keep it going – in this soil anything germinates.”
He said he‘d saved some seed in order to grow it again next year and a friend has also persuaded him to try Castille.
The winter barley has been, on average, harvested at 6.3 t/ha (2.55 t/acre) between 14-17% moisture.
He said that Haka had performed slightly better than Camion and Carat but only by a slight margin.
Damp and misty weather is proving to cause Mr Warrener some aggravation.
“There‘s been a lot of mist and humidity which means that on some days we can‘t get going till four in the afternoon.”
