The 100ha (250 acres) cut so far had averaged about 8.2t/ha (3.3t/acre) – slightly above average and on the poorer fields. All was going for malting, leaving just over 100ha (250 acres) to cut.

The 300ha (740 acres) of oilseed rape looked very well, as did the 500ha (1235 acres) of winter wheat. “The wheats look excellent but are still two weeks away at least,” said Mr Tuer.

After that would come 120ha (296 acres) of Oxbridge spring barley on an ex-organic farm, which was suffering from weeds, but looked fairly well, he added.

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2008/09 variety with very high UK treated yields and the top score for resistance to lodging with PGR. Combined with an unbeaten second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, this new variety from Syngenta Seeds will help UK growers rise to the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
