Carrot growers call for price increase

British carrot growers have called for an increase in carrot prices in a bid to save the industry from disaster.

Poor growing conditions, low yields and rising input costs have left many growers with “serious concerns” over the future of their industry, according to the British Carrot Growers’ Association.

And price cuts by retailers in a bid to woo shoppers have left many growers struggling to make a profit.

‘Disastrous’

“At the very least, we need a price rise of 20% need to stand still,” Martin Evans, British Carrot Growers’ Association chairman, said.

“The alternative is disastrous for the industry.”

Mr Evans said UK growers had experienced the “worst growing season in memory”, leaving many growers without the confidence to continue next year.

‘Stark outcome’

“The outcome of this is stark. Supplies of British carrots will fall, which means imports of dubious quality will fill gap,” he said.

“The solution is straightforward. Retail buyers need to listen to the industry and act in their own best interests.”
