Disappointing start on Romney Marsh

Andrew Cragg has almost reached the end of the oilseed rape harvest at Brooker Farm, Romney Marsh, Kent, and is disappointed with the year so far.

“Almost all of the 100ha of DK Cabernet, PR46W21 and Charger is out of the ground, and it yielded 3.6t/ha,” he said.

“We’ve seen far better yields in the past. It’s disappointing to be under our 20 year average.”

Crop facts

  • Crop: Oilseed rape
  • Varieties: DK Cabernet, PR46W21 and Charger
  • Area: 100ha
  • Yield: 3.6t/ha

Although most of the oilseed rape was in the barn, Mr Cragg still had the winter and spring wheat to go, as well as peas – all of which were at least 10 days away.

“What we need to remember is that, for us, it’s a late year due to the poor start,” he said.

“Hopefully we’ll have some more positive results as we move further on with harvest.”
