Drought affected Norfolk crops
John Steele said dry weather in June and July had affected his wheat crop in Norfolk.
“The quality was not affected but some bushel weights were down.”
Harvest finished on August 10, which he said was early considering they normally start on August 15.
He said he was quite happy with yields of 132ha (330acres) of Solstice, Einstein, Consort and Gladiator, with a little Mascot and Robigus. “Some yields were down, but some were good, so it was a fairly good average.”
Quality had all been OK with about average Hagbergs, protein levels and bushel weights.
Solstice had performed particularly well, but he said it had been a bad year for Robigus. “It has been suspect too long and let us down. We will not grow it again next year.”
“Those that have a stretched acreage and not big enough combines are still combining in the area, but the smaller farms are done,” he added.
