Excellent harvest in Hants

Tim Sykes’ harvest is all done and dusted at Denmead Farm, Waterlooville, Hampshire after an excellent year for most crops.

Although the winter linseed was very disappointing, the spring linseed was much more pleasing at 2.2t/ha.

“The winter crop was hopeless, and it’s difficult to pinpoint the key reason, but at least the spring linseed came out where it should have been,” he said.

The 100ha of Tipple and Propino spring barley yielded a pleasing 6.8t/ha.

“Alongside the good yields, straw quality was high,” Mr Sykes added.

Claire winter wheat yielded a very respectable 9.9t/ha, although it was outshone by Crusoe.

“Crusoe was the stand-out performer for us, reaching over 10t/ha and hitting milling quality.

“Everything has gone well and in most cases yields have been very good,” Mr Sykes said.

“It was smooth running for us with everything coming off nice and dry, up until a couple of Fridays ago when the heavens broke.”
