Excellent yields near Northleach
Richard Daniels has had a very pleasing harvest at Broadfield Farms, Northleach, Gloucestershire, following a dry and successful year.
“We’ve seen some very good yields across the board,” he said. “Being organic we would naturally expect to be behind conventional farmers, yet some of our yields have been almost as good.”
The 324ha of Westminster spring barley yielded between 4.9t and 5.6t/ha, coming off the field between 14% and 20% moisture.
Both straw quality and quantity was very good, and bushel weights were better than last year.
The 32ha of spring oats were also very pleasing, yielding an average of 4.9t/ha.
“All in all, the year’s been very successful,” said Mr Daniels. “The harvest is finished and the straw’s wrapped and off the field.
“We’ve got plenty of time now to focus on drilling winter crops, which we’ll expect to start in early October.”
