Farm Sprayer Operator of the Year 2012: enter now
Crop protection is one of the most complex challenges faced on farm. From filling the sprayer, through applying the spray to disposing of the empty containers, sprayer operators are faced with many possible ways of doing the job.
But the use of pesticides is under constant scrutiny from the public, politicians and environmentalists alike. The industry has already seen the withdrawal of isoproturon (IPU) and trifluralin, while other chemicals are under threat, having been detected in water. This highlights just how important it is to use products safely and efficiently in a way that meets crop needs and protects public, operator and environmental safety.
It’s a tricky balance, but for many operators it is second nature. Now in its 29th year, the Farm Sprayer Operator Of The Year (FSOOTY) award, organised by Syngenta and Farmers Weekly, aims to recognise this professional approach and help encourage further improvements.
Crucially, it’s not about having the latest kit. If you can demonstrate ingenuity and an ability to meet these varying objectives by using agrochemicals sensibly, then you are in with a chance of winning – just like last year’s winner, Steve Lake from Hambledon in Surrey (pictured).
The first 50 correct entries will receive a free ticket to Cereals 2012, incorporating Sprays and Sprayers, on 13 and 14 June. Judges will also select eight regional finalists, who will each receive an expenses-paid trip for two to Cereals 2012.
For the overall winner, the top prize is an all-expenses-paid study tour to Germany, plus the coveted Farm Sprayer Operator of the Year trophy.
