Finishing up at Hall Farm
Andrew Maddever hopes to finish harvest at Hall Farm, Whetstead, Suffolk, tomorrow (3 September), bar 9ha (22 acres) of linseed.
“We got all the Gallant and Solstice milling wheat before the rain, and it all made over 13% protein, 79kg/hl and more than 300 Hagberg.”
Yields had been disappointing, however. “I don’t think we’ll quite manage 8tha (3.2t/acre) across all the wheats.”
Viscount did the best at 8.75t/ha (3.5t/acre). “We had less than four inches of rain between March and July – it clearly was not anywhere near enough – you can’t grow wheat without rain.”
But Excalibur and Flash oilseed rape did well, at 4.1t/ha (1.66t/acre) at 42-43% oil and 8-12% moisture. “The Flash yielded the most, getting 5t/ha (2t/acre) on virgin rapseed ground.”
Tipple spring barley struggled to make 7t/ha (2.8t/acre), but was of good quality, he added.
“All being well we will finish harvest tomorrow – but I’ve had a back operation so have been out of action for a while, so I need to say a big thank you to all my guys for their hard work.”
