ALL GENTETICALLY Modified trial sites in England have been managed appropriately, according to the latest GM Inspectorate report.

In the year to March 31 2004 the inspectorate visited 128 GM trial sites, to ensure that the legislation concerning the deliberate release of GMOs is complied with.

Investigations covered crops during the growing season, as well as visits to sites to ensure compliance in the post-trial period.

“We are pleased to report that deliberate releases of GM crops have been generally well managed this year,” said Sarah Hugo, head of the GM Inspectorate.

The Inspectorate also conducted 62 audits of conventional seed being marketed by 32 companies.

“It is also reassuring to note that, for the crops we audit, seed companies have good systems in place to minimise the risk of adventitious GM presence.”
