Good quality in Oxon
Philip Chamberlain was pleased with wheat quality at Crowmarsh Battle Farm, Wallingford, Oxfordshire. But yields were varied, he said.
Yields of wheat which was planted late in November/December were disappointing, whereas crops planted earlier yielded closer to normal.
But quality was good, with later planted crops holding onto Hagbergs better, he said. Xi19 protein ranged from 13.53 – 15.35%, with Hagbergs from low 300s to mid 400s. Malacca protein was 14.5 – 16.5% with Hagbergs of 345 – 390 and Hereward protein was 15.1 – 16.3%, with Hagbergs of 260 -290. Second wheat Einstein protein was 11.7 – 12.7%, Hagbergs of 207 – 380.
He said he is not too worried for quality of the remaining wheat as it is all going for feed. Progress is well ahead of this time last year, he noted.
