Harvest 09: Bravour impresses in Cambs
Will Mumford was finishing off winter barley at Agden Hill Farm, Great Staughton, Cambridgeshire, today (31 July).
The 50ha (125 acres) of Pearl had averaged a disappointing 7.2t/ha (2.9t/acre), following a waterlogged winter.
“It was the most variable crop I have ever cut, ranging from 4-10t/ha (1.6-4t/acre).”
Mr Mumford’s rape had also been variable, having re-sown some Galileo and Lioness with Bravour last September.
The 50ha (125 acre) mixture averaged almost 4.9t/ha (2t/acre), with the Bravour substantially outperforming the other varieties.
“When we swathed it I didn’t think we would have more than 1t/acre (2.5t/ha) – when I got into it I thought the combine’s yield meter was wrong!”
Harvest at Agden Hill Farm was now halfway through, but progress in the area was more like 20% complete, he added.
“The wheat is almost fit, but it doesn’t look very good and I think it has begun to deteriorate.”
