Harvest 09: Excellent yields at Pantycoch
Geoff Thomas has finished winter barley and oilseed rape at Pantycoch Farm, Letterston, Haverfordwest, and is thrilled with yields all round.
The 4ha (10 acres) of Flash oilseed rape, cut on Saturday (August 8), yielded 5.3t/ha (2.1t/acre) at between 12% and 15% moisture.
“I was all for ripping it out in February – it looked awful,” he said. “We’ve been trying desperately to get to 2t/acre – it’s like the Holy Grail. I thoroughly enjoy the challenge.”
Winter barley yields were also fantastic, he said. “It’s done comfortably over 3t/acre (7.4t/ha), with a nice big crop of straw, so I’m delighted.”
The 28ha (70 acres) of Quench and Westminster spring barley was still about a week away. “I am quietly confident – it looks quite good.”
That would hopefully give Mr Thomas time to catch up with contract baling in the area.
“It’s getting quite reminiscent of last year – only the ground is an awful lot wetter. We’re lucky we’re on free draining land.
“My neighbour is cutting spring barley now, and I’d have thought there will be a bit of wheat going next week.”
