Harvest 09: Finished at Oldmeldrum

Richard Stephen finished harvest at Muirton of Barra, Oldmeldrum, Aberdeenshire, almost a week ago, having escaped the worst of the weather.

“We finished on Tuesday (8 September) and have just started lifting potatoes today,” he said.

Harvest was about 90% complete in the area, with farmers finishing up the last of the crops. “Some of the wheat isn’t ready so they’re cutting spring barley instead.”

Mr Stephen’s yields had been about average, with Riband winter wheat yielding 10t/ha (4t/acre).

Retriever winter barley averaged 8.6t/ha (3.75t/acre), and Catana oilseed rape came in at 4.3t/ha (1.75t/acre).

Oxbridge spring barley produced about 6.2t/ha (2.5t/acre), he said. “Quality was fine – the malting barley has all gone away and didn’t come back again.”

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2009/10 variety with very high UK treated yields and a maximum 9 rating for resistance to lodging with and without PGR. Combined with the highest second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, Duxford will continue to help UK growers meet the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
