Harvest 09: Halfway at Gosmere

Harvest is about halfway through at Bill Harbour’s Gosmere Farm, Sheldwich, Kent.

Having finished the oilseed rape and peas, he had now made a start on the winter wheat. “It doesn’t look very high in protein.”

So far the 20ha (50 acres) of Solstice had yielded very well, at 11t/ha (4.5t/acre), but 30ha (74 acres) of Xi19 as a second wheat had not done so well, at 7.2t/ha (2.9t/acre).

Kahuna peas averaged a pleasing 10.9t/ha (4.4t/acre). “One bit was pretty iffy, so the rest of it has done very well.”

Oilseed rape was very mixed, said Mr Harbour. “The star of the show was Cabaret, which yielded almost 5t/ha (2t/acre).”

He now had 70ha (172 acres) of winter wheat and 30ha (74 acres) of AC Barrie spring wheat to combine.

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2009/10 variety with very high UK treated yields and a maximum 9 rating for resistance to lodging with and without PGR. Combined with the highest second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, Duxford will continue to help UK growers meet the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
