Harvest 09: Into wheat in Powys

David Price still has most of his wheat to combine at Presteigne, Powys, having cut just a few headlands between the showers.

“It wasn’t ripe until a week ago and I don’t think we’ve got much sprouting yet. But it’s pretty variable – it doesn’t look the nicest sample in the world.”

He hoped to be back combining the 36ha (90 acres) of Oakley this afternoon (7 September), but was very worried about the wet straw.

“We actually chopped the headlands yesterday, which is unheard of in this part of the world. But I don’t want to have to deal with wet straw on the fields.”

Mr Price’s Gerald winter oats had been the crop of the year, yielding 39t off just 4ha (10 acres). “It looked very thin, but I put late nitrogen on and it produced nice big ears.”

Oilseed rape had also been pleasing, averaging almost 5t/ha (2t/acre).

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2009/10 variety with very high UK treated yields and a maximum 9 rating for resistance to lodging with and without PGR. Combined with the highest second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, Duxford will continue to help UK growers meet the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
