Nigel Horne has finished spring barley at Catmore Farm, Newbury, Berkshire, but is yet to make a start on his oilseed rape.
“It is so backward this year – we sprayed it off less than two weeks ago, but should be into it at the weekend.”
Mr Horne had 71ha (175 acres) of Lioness and Cabernet rapeseed to cut – a mixture of winter rape reseeded with spring rape.
He was now drying the last of the Tipple spring barley, which yielded about average at 6.2-6.8t/ha (2.5-2.75t/acre). “The colour is so much brighter than last year.”
The 200ha (500 acres) of winter wheat looked well, he said. “I’m quite optimistic about it.
”I’m not too concerned about the weather – although we’re making slow progress, and it’s not an easy season, the wheat is not really fit yet.”
Crop: Spring barley
Area: 76ha (188 acres)
Yield: 6.2-6.8t/ha (2.5-2.75t/acre)
Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2009/10 variety with very high UK treated yields and a maximum 9 rating for resistance to lodging with and without PGR. Combined with the highest second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, Duxford will continue to help UK growers meet the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
