Harvest 09: Progressing well in Sussex

Harvest is progressing rapidly at Tim Lock’s Houghton Farm, Arundel, Sussex, and yields have been generally pleasing.

Today (10 August) he was combining winter oats on a neighbouring farm, having done 20ha (50 acres) of Mascani on his own farm at 8.2t/ha (3.3t/acre).

He had also cut most of his Tipple spring barley, which had yielded well at 6.8-7.4t/ha (2.75-3t/acre) and had all made malting quality.

Winter barley had yielded extremely well, at 8.4t/ha (3.4t/acre), but the oilseed rape was extremely disappointing, due to pigeon damage over the winter.

It yielded just 2.7t/ha (1.1t/acre). “It was better than it looked back in the winter, when it was completely bald.”

Mr Lock’s wheat was all now ripe and ready to cut, and he had started on 20ha (50 acres) of Defender, which had burnt off on light land in June and yielded just 7.4t/ha (3t/acre).

Most people were getting on well in the area. “One person is finishing tomorrow, and we should have made a reasonable hole by the end of the week.”
