Harvest 09: Started wheat in Humberside
Richard Beachell started combining winter wheat at Field House Farm, Bainton, Humberside, yesterday (9 August), and was pleased with yields so far.
He had cut 22ha (55 acres) of Cordiale as a second wheat at 14.5% moisture, and reckoned it was averaging about 10t/ha (4t/acre).
Although the yield was good, protein content was low, at just 11.8%, with a bushelweight of 81kg/hl.
Mr Beachell finished his Castille and Excalibur oilseed rape on Saturday, and was pleased with yields of 4.5t/ha (1.8t/acre).
Having been rained off today, he was busy drying the last 60t of Pearl winter barley, which was cut at 19.5% moisture.
That, too, had yielded well, at 8-8.6t/ha (3.2-3.5t/acre) and 1.5% nitrogen.
Mr Beachell hoped to finish the Cordiale before moving into Tipple spring barley, and finishing off with the Oakley first wheat.
Other farmers in the area had about finished winter barley, and were 50-75% through the rapeseed. Very little wheat had yet been cut, he added.

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2009/10 variety with very high UK treated yields and a maximum 9 rating for resistance to lodging with and without PGR. Combined with the highest second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, Duxford will continue to help UK growers meet the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
