Harvest 09: Starting wheat in Hants

Tim Sykes was just making a start on winter wheat at Denmead Farm, Waterlooville, Hampshire, today (13 August).

“It looks promising – we just need a decent break of weather.”

Very little wheat had been cut in the area, and some people were still finishing up oilseed rape, he said.

Mr Sykes had finished his Tipple spring barley, and was pleased with yields of more than 6.2t/ha (2.5t/acre), all of which made malting quality.

The Castille and Expert oilseed rape had not been so great, having shed seed after being sprayed off for too long in the wet weather.

It yielded just 3.2t/ha (1.3t/acre) – about 20% down on a normal year.

Crop: Spring barley
Variety: Tipple
Area: 109ha (270 acres)

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2009/10 variety with very high UK treated yields and a maximum 9 rating for resistance to lodging with and without PGR. Combined with the highest second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, Duxford will continue to help UK growers meet the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
