Harvest 2004: A working week

THE SUN continues to shine over much of the UK on Friday (Sept 3), allowing farmers to make considerable progress with their harvest.

With nearly all of the wheat being ready to cut, farmers are putting in long hours to get it into the shed.

There have been more reports of farmers who have finished their harvest from all over the UK.

Trevor Harriman from Scotgrain told FARMERS WEEKLY Harvest highlights: “By the end of next week I should think we‘ll be well through harvest.

“However there is still a lot to be done in the north-east and north-west corners of the country.”

But even after some pleasing results he warns: “We should not minimise the problems farmers have faced this year. Growers will be happy to see the end of this harvest.”

“It has been a poor year all round really,” said Tim Cooper in Wix, Essex, after his crops yielded badly.

Phil Dowson “finally got harvest wrapped up yesterday” on his farm near Richmond, North Yorkshire. “We grabbed bits and pieces when we could.”

Paul Wilson has finished his harvest in Warwickshire but said: “On the whole it hasn‘t been too bad, but it‘s definitely one season I‘m glad to see the back of.”

Kent farmer Nick Baxter still has 80ha (200 acres) of wheat to harvest and a bit of oilseed rape to drill. So far progress is a week behind normal, he said.

Meanwhile Stuart Fuller-Shapcott is feeling “stressed” after what can only be described as a very difficult harvest in his region near Kelso, Scottish Borders.

He has just finished combining the spring barley and is going to make a start on his wheat this afternoon (Sept 3).

According to FWi weather services, most of the UK will have warm sunny weather for nearly all of the weekend, however rain could threaten western Scotland later on Saturday (Sept 4).
