Harvest Highlights – Oilseed rape finish means easy weekend
Brian Horsfield is expecting a quiet weekend after finally managing to finish 60ha of Castille oilseed rape yesterday, over a week after beginning.
Yields at his farm in Great Wilbraham, Cambridgeshire averaged 3t/ha, but varied between 1-4t/ha. Moisture content also varied between 7.2 and 11.5%.
With the oilseed rape finished he expected a quiet weekend, he said. But wheat, oats and peas could all come fit at the same time. “It’s going to be chaos.”
He expected to start combining 200ha of Alchemy and Istabraq winter wheat next week. Moisture content tested this week at 18.5%.
Gerald winter oats, and peas, which were a little behind this year, were probably about 7-10 days away.
The current wet weather was a problem, as had been the dry April, he said. “This season has all been topsy-turvy.”
