Harvest results pleasing
He grows a total of 400ha (1,000 acres) of combinable crops, consisting of barley, beans and wheat, to be almost exclusively consumed by the pigs on his farm.
“We‘ve had above average yields – things have gone very well.”
With light gravel and chalk land, Mr Edwards was able to make an early start on his harvest with the predominant crop being winter barley.
He started harvesting at the beginning of July and got the vast majority of the crop cut before rain set in.
Most of the crop came in below 15% moisture, allowing him to save on drying costs.
“That‘s not to say we weren‘t pulling out our hair at one point, just wishing for the rain to stop, but we got some gaps and managed to finish it all off.”
This morning (Aug 25) he was helping his neighbouring farmer with his harvest and this afternoon he‘s doing some cultivation to get the land ready for next years crops.
