The first block of Flagon winter barley at JV Farming, Dorchester, Dorset, proved pleasing in both yield and quality.
Operations manager Tim Merry said the 85ha (210 acres) had averaged 8.3t/ha (3.4t/acre) over the weighbridge, with a moisture of 17.9%.
“We had 400t sold forward which has passed for malting,” he said. “I am very pleased with both yield and quality.”
Mr Merry was moving onto the next 90ha (222 acre) block today (24 July) and expected to be into Castille oilseed rape over the weekend, weather permitting.
“It has been a difficult start to harvest, having taken us 10 days to do what is potentially two days work. With a Claas 600TT and a 10.5m cutter bar we know what we can do, but the weather has been very restricting, which is very frustrating for me and my team.”

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2009/10 variety with very high UK treated yields and a maximum 9 rating for resistance to lodging with and without PGR. Combined with the highest second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, Duxford will continue to help UK growers meet the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
