Keith Challen visits RoGator sprayer factory

It’s been a busy month in the workshop. Our 15-year-old 8m Simba FreeFlow drill has had new bearings throughout the hopper, various bowsers have been re-plumbed and made ready for the coming spraying and fertilising campaign.

My latest invention came to fruition – a bulk induction hopper based in the yard. It can serve as either bowser or sprayer and has been manufactured out of stainless steel, egg boxes, milk bottle tops and pipe cleaners, all sourced from around the farm.

Famous last words, last month I commented on our lack of rain in the vale. Well, it hasn’t stopped raining since then. At long last main drains are running and our clay soils are starting to get near field capacity. All we need is for it to stop now, so we can get on with top dressing some oilseed rape.

I have just returned from the RoGator factory in Holland after a three-day sprayer operator training course. The drive over was a real eye-opener and I was amazed how wet northern France, Belgium and Holland were. Most areas had water standing or signs where it stood. The other noticeable thing was just how little winter cropping we saw.

Operator training is always a good idea, but a few too many beers in the bar the night before wasn’t. Anyway, Agco should be praised on an impressive factory visit; seeing the RoGator being built was highly impressive.

I’m sure I’m not alone when I say Top Gear is the best thing on television. Well, last week’s Dominator snow plough conversion really got my creative juices flowing. I’m not giving anything away yet but watch this space… By the way, does anyone have the phone number for NASA?
