New option for maize weeds
A NEWLY APPROVED herbicide gives growers another option for broad-leaved and grass weed control in maize, said Syngenta.
Callisto (mesotrione) is based on a naturally occurring herbicide produced by the Bottlebrush plant (Callistemon citrinus) and is suitable for controlling a range of weeds, said the firm‘s Tony Smith.
“The natural origins of Callisto give the product an excellent environmental profile and exceptional crop safety,” he said.
Despite it having strong residual activity, growers can still safely crop spring wheat, barley, ryegrass and maize in the following year, the firm said.
Increasing the options for weed control in maize has added importance as 2005 is the last year growers can use atrazine-based products, Mr Smith added.
For emerged weeds such as fat hen, black nightshade and oilseed rape (up to six leaf stage), he recommends using at a rate of 0.75l/ha. Annual grasses require a higher rate of 1.5l/ha, he noted.
