Oats steal the show near Crowland

Mark Woodroff has finished harvest at Hundreds Farm, Crowland, Lincolnshire, and is busy drilling winter wheat.
“It’s been a relatively easy year – we started harvesting wheat in July, which is very early for us.
“That hasn’t happened very often in the past 30 or 40 years.”
Cordiale, Grafton and Scout wheat yielded about 9.3t/ha (3.75t/acre), he said. “Bushelweights were pretty good, at 82-84kg/hl.”
Spring beans, finished on Friday (2 September) did over 5t/ha (2t/acre).
“But the oats were the best – they did 8.6t/ha (3.5t/acre) and were sold at £160-£170/t, which, considering the low inputs, is pretty good.”
Oilseed rape, drilled on 15 August, was growing well, and Mr Woodroff was now drilling winter wheat.
“We’ll start potato picking next week.”
