Oilseed rape woes
Mr Fairs is in anguish over the failings of his Elan oilseed rape.
Only 15% of his rape is left remaining after a dry autumn last year made establishment suffer.
The 50 ha (120 acres) he‘s been left with, out of the original 365 ha (900 acres), has been yielding 3.71 t/ha (30 cwt).
Mr Fairs described his 80ha (200 acre) Sequel barley harvest as “average” as yield was just a fraction under 7.41 t/ha (3 t/acre) while specific weight was around 65 kg/hl.
“Its not terribly exciting yield wise, but it‘s a shame about the depressing prices.”
Mr Fairs was at one point concerned about the amount of rain his wheat crop was getting.
“Don‘t laugh, but we had a spell of worrying about the lack of rain we were receiving.”
All in all Mr Fairs has had a very average year.
“We‘re not going to be breaking any records this year – it‘s just a very average year.”
Mr Fairs, like a lot of other farmers around the UK, is frustrated by the prices he‘s getting.
“The only thing that really matters is world prices, not schemes.”
