Farmers are battling with some of the worst autumn conditions they have ever experienced.

Three months of sustained rain has left land saturated making drilling impossible and potato harvesting incredibly difficult.

According to Met Office figures, collated by the Environment Agency, in the six months to the end of September 2012 north east England has seen 185% of the long term average for rainfall at 704mm.

North west England had 843 mm of rain over the same period, which is 163% of the long term average.

Figures for the first three weeks of October show that the Midlands, South East, South West and East Anglia have already all had more rain than the long terms average for the month.
