Ploughing whilst waiting for Wheat in Yorkshire

Ploughing whilst waiting for Wheat in Yorkshire

Busy, Phil Dowson of High House Farm, Richmond, N.Yorks. was ploughing set-aside land today while waiting for wheat to ripen.

He was looking forward to combining 49ha (120 acres) of Alchemy, Robigus and Zebedee winter wheat, which he hoped to begin this weekend.

Considering the weather the crops looked OK with clean samples and was free of weeds. Just 2ha (5 acres) were lodged, where the crop had grown thicker following poultry manure, he said.

Mr Dowson completed 16ha Lioness and Castille oilseed rape last Monday [30 July] cut dry at 8-9%moisture. He was fairly pleased with yields of 4.3 t/ha. The local co-op tested oil content at 45%, with the Lioness slightly ahead.

“Considering the weather it went pretty well,” he said.

Mr Dowson was hopeful for his harvest, with better prices. “You never know until it’s been through the combine – time will tell.”
