Processing plant closure hits Scottish pea producers

Scottish farmers face a ‘serious blow’ after Dundee-based food processing and freezing plant Alpine Foods went into administration.

The company, one of the country’s largest producers of frozen food, had been granted more than £1.5m in Scottish Executive support since 2001.

The money was used to expand Alpine Foods’ processing lines for frozen vegetables, including peas, cauliflower and broccoli, as well as soft fruit, from Fife, Tayside and the Mearns.
