Push for milling premiums

Sample everything and even if you have sold feed wheat, there may be a milling premium for it, advises Gleadell’s managing director David Sheppard.

“There’s a fair argument that if a feed type variety has a bit of quality to it and tests better than feed, the grower should see some of that benefit,” he said. “Farmers should push this issue and ask their merchant to discuss premiums.”

Gleadell has sold eight different milling wheat specs for export already since harvest began and even Group 4 wheats are finding milling homes at anything from ÂŁ2 to ÂŁ6/t above feed price, he says.

The UK is still very competitive against French wheat, although both countries are exporting at a fast pace, filling gaps which poor quality results have created in countries like Germany which would usually be accounting for much of the trade which the UK is now doing.
