Rain frustrates in Dorset
Almost 5mm of rain overnight has frustrated Peter Snell’s chances of combining at North Farm, Horton, Dorset, today (27 July).
With more than half of his oilseed rape still to do, and a poor forecast, he did not expect to back on combining until mid-week at the earliest.
So far he had cut 19ha (47 acres) of Castille at 12-13.5% moisture, which had averaged about 4t/ha (1.6t/acre).
He had also combined 11ha (27 acres) of Epure at 9-10% moisture, with a very pleasing yield of 4.5t/ha (1.8t/acre).
The Tipple spring barley was nearly ripe, at 19% moisture, and the wheat was also turning fast, said Mr Snell.
“It is all going to come at once. We’ve got the machinery, storage and staff, but presently not the weather,” he said. “It will be busy when we do get going again.”
