Rained off near Bainton

Oilseed rape is too damp to cut at Richard Beachell’s Field House Farm, Bainton, Humberside, today (5 August), following a showery few days.

“Some people are combining today, but ours is not over-ripe yet.”

So far the Excalbur had yielded “remarkably well”, at 4.9t/ha (2t/acre), while Castille had been disappointing at 4t/ha (1.6t/acre).

“The Castille had a lot of flea beetle early on – we’ll be growing all Excalibur next year.”

Rapeseed had been very slow to ripen in the area, as Roundup spray had not worked very well this year, he added.

Cassata winter barley had yielded about average, at 8t/ha (3.25t/acre), with low nitrogen and below 15% moisture. “We haven’t had any drying costs this year.”

Cha Cha spring barley was nearly ready, and looked well, while Cordiale winter wheat wasn’t far off, either.

“As soon as we get some nice weather it will be ready, but the forecast is a bit unsettled. That said, nothing’s taking any harm yet.”
