Rained off near Garmouth

Heavy rain has brought harvest to a halt at Corskie Farm, Garmouth, Morayshire, where Iain Green has finished cutting winter barley.
“We started on 23 July and it’s all baled up. Now we’ve moved to another farm, where the barley is just ready, but it’s pouring.”
Mr Green was very pleased with winter barley yields, which touched 10t/ha (4t/acre) in parts of the field.
Overall, the Element averaged 9.34t/ha (3.8t/acre) over a weighbridge, with Volume at 8.59t/ha (3.48t/acre).
“It did need drying – some came in at 17.1% but it averaged 16.3%.”
With no oilseed rape, Mr Green would move into spring barley after the winter barley. “It’s about 14 days away – it looks good, so if we get the right weather it will be okay.
“The wheat is coming on fast, too; we could be cutting it before we finish the spring barley.”
