Rob Bebbington’s Fieldfare Farms yields Boost winter barley

Boost winter barley has yielded well at Rob Bebbington’s Fieldfare Farms, Whitchurch, Shrops, with an average of 9.1t/ha (3.7t/acre).

“We’re very pleased with that,” he said. With a bushelweight of 67kg/hl the sample from the 19ha (47 acres) cut yesterday was good too, leaving 16ha (40 acres) to finish off today (24 July).

“We’re just about to make a start into the 34ha (84 acres) of Saffron this afternoon, which doesn’t look overly ready, but we’re going to give it a try,” said Mr Bebbington.

He also had 20ha (50 acres) of Suzuka winter barley, and 162ha (400 acres) of Excalibur and Castille oilseed rape. “The rape is still fairly green – it will be another week off.” That made the season very late, as Mr Bebbington normally started the rape on 17 July.

The 202ha (500 acres) of Oakley, Alchemy, Humber and Claire winter wheat was still three to four weeks away from being ripe, he added.
