Scottish OSR disappointing

Jim Cargill at Cold Stream Farm, Aberdeenshire, has finished his winter barley and oilseed rape, and is waiting for winter wheat and spring barley.

Eighty hectares of Pict winter barley averaged 8.75t/ha which he said was average. Grain was a little small, and bushel weights came in at 65kg/hl. He said moisture was good, and conditions were good for combining.

But oilseed rape has been disappointing, with 65ha of Winner and Tequila yielding 3.25t/ha, despite having looked more promising. He suggests the cold, wet spring affected the crop. Despite low yields, quality was ok, he noted.

Optic spring barley is ready to cut but he thinks the wet spring will have affected the yields.
