Second wheats disappointing
Oxfordshire farmer Lionel Wells finished cutting wheat two weeks ago (mid August) with varied results. He said first wheats had done alright, but the second wheats “didn’t seem to perform”.
First wheat Malacca was disappointing at 8.1t/ha, but Claire yielded 10t/ha and Welford 9.5 – 9.8t/ha. Second wheats Savannah and Richmond cut at 7.5t/ha.
But he said bushel weights were quite good at 78 – 82kg/hl, and moisture was very low due to the dry spell.
Mr Wells said yields met the farm’s five year average, but are down on last year. “The second wheats really let us down.”
Combining finished a fortnight earlier than last harvest and he is currently drilling oilseed rape.
