Slow progress in Scotland
Alec Webster from Caithness near John O’Groats in Scotland said the weather has been too bad this harvest so things are going slowly.
He said Scylla winter barley was disappointing with yields of 6.25t/ha, and it was struggling for a good bushel weight. Regina winter barley looked better, and yields are 2.5t/ha greater than Scylla, he believes. He did not grow Scylla last year, but Regina yields were much the same.
Mr Webster said the crops were too damp to start cutting before 3pm each day, and he has to cut at 20-21% moisture because “it’s as good as it will get”.
