Smooth progress at Ingthorpe

Wheat yields are 1.9t/ha (0.75t/acre) down on last year at Philip Shotbolt’s Ingthorpe Farm, Stamford, Lincolnshire, but harvest has run smoothly.
“We are on very dry, brashy ground, which does suffer terribly with drought,” he said.
Having finished cutting Gallant winter wheat, yields had ranged from below 6.2t/ha (2.5t/acre) to above 8.6t/ha (3.5t/acre), averaging 7.4t/ha (3t/acre).
“We’re very pleased with the quality – it is all top-spec milling quality.”
A hybrid Pioneer variety of oilseed rape yielded well at 3.7t/ha (1.5t/acre) – although that was slightly below last year’s bumper crop.
That left Fuego spring beans and linseed to combine. “The beans are looking dire – they didn’t ripen, they just died. They’re unlikely to do over 2.5t/ha (1t/acre).”
Linseed looked better, and was likely to yield about 1.9t/ha (0.75t/acre), he added.
